Those of us who do Airedale rescue realize the value of making the right connections. On a regular basis, we connect with those looking to give up their Airedale, those who want to adopt an Airedale and those who want to support us with our cause. In addition, we make “love connections” between our rescue Airedales, their foster homes and their new families. This last connection is what gives meaning to everything we do.
Let me introduce Zeus. He was the first of 55+ Airedales who came through SOAR in 2011. He was originally purchased to be a coon hound but he didn't much care for the sport. He ended up tied out to a dog box in 20 degree weather in the snow. He was about 20 pounds underweight and scared of loud noises.
As Zeus' foster dad, Tom made that first connection with Zeus...giving him not only the attention that he craved, but setting boundaries for him and teaching him what it takes to be a valued family member. Through Tom, Zeus learned to trust again.
All of the love and patience that Tom gave to Zeus prepared him for what was to come next...the connection with his forever home. Nikki absolutely adores him...and the feeling is mutual!
Jackson came into rescue as dog number 1218 at the Jackson County Animal Shelter. He was picked up as a stray that no one was looking for. I was the first to connect with this senior boy and found one of the most awesome Airedales I have known. Jackson was well-mannered and loving as he settled in right away to life in a home. Joshua quickly discovered the same thing and was happy to make him a permanent member of his family. He will never be without a name again.
Daisy is a gentle soul with a special story. She left her pawprint on the heart of many people who connected with her along the way. She came into rescue with Demodex mange and bacterial infections that left her skin raw and bloody. She needed lots of medical care along with love and determination to restore her health. Ed was her first foster dad, and although he has fostered many Airedales, Daisy was very special. I could see it in his eyes the day I picked her up from him.
Daisy also made a connection with my vet, Dr. Mary, whom she gave soft little kisses to every time she saw her. Then there was the groomer, Terri, who donated her time to give Daisy the care that she needed to see her through the worst of her skin problems. Terri got to connect with Daisy on a daily basis for almost 3 weeks as she watched her improve.
Everyone who met Daisy connected with her and became her cheerleader. There were several people involved in getting her into rescue and several more involved with her treatment. Her story is still being written...but in the mean time, she is enjoying her time here with my Alice and Sweet Pea...especially Sweet Pea.
If these small glimpses into the life of Airedale rescue have touched you in any way, we would love to connect with you also! We are always looking to welcome new volunteers. Besides fostering, there are many other aspects of rescue that you can become involved with. To let us know of your interest in volunteering, fill out our on-line volunteer application.
And as 2011 comes to a close and we begin to look ahead to 2012, we would also appreciate donations to help us continue to make a difference in the lives of these wonderful dogs. Can you take a moment to help? Make your donation in honor of or in memory of a person or Airedale that you connected with. If you send us a photo and a few words, we will set up a special page for them.
I hope to inspire everyone to connect with SOAR and Airedale rescue in some way for 2012...even if it is just to spread the word about Airedale rescue. Thank you!
